What Are Hurricanes?
Hurricanes are gigantic, swirling storms. Hurricanes produce winds of 119 kilometers per hour. That is faster than the fastest animal on land which is the cheetah. They sometimes strike land, and hurricanes form over ocean waters. There are five categories of hurricanes. The scale of categories is called the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. The categories for the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale are based on wind speed.
